Shellacs and the spread of commercial music in the Mediterranean

The second chapter of mediaphone focuses on the arrival of shellac records in the Mediterranean.

When shellac discs replaced wax cylinders, recorded music started to move faster and further. Cities were growing, new listeners appeared, and music became something people could buy, collect, and replay.

In this episode, we move through some of the places where that change became audible. Recording hubs like Istanbul, rural repertoires reshaped for urban audiences, and songs that crossed borders as discs traveled from one port to another.
