Tape and the arrival of foreign field recordists in the Mediterranean
With the arrival of magnetic tape, recording became portable and high-quality. Ethnomusicologists from France, the United States, and other parts of the world traveled across the Mediterranean to capture local musical traditions at a time when modernity, industrialization, and the decline of rural life were transforming society and its customs.
These recordings were often released on labels in the countries of the researchers, but rarely in the regions where the music was created.
This episode of Aguaespejo, the final chapter of Mediaphone, a series on the early history of Mediterranean sound recording, focuses on these foreign field recordists. The program moves through three scenes (shepherds, weddings, and lullabies) mixing historic LPs with our some of my field recordings.
